the bane chronicles

Fans of The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices can get to know warlock Magnus Bane like never before in this collection of New York Times bestselling tales, in print for the first time with an exclusive new story and illustrated material.

This collection of eleven short stories illuminates the life of the enigmatic Magnus Bane, whose alluring personality, flamboyant style, and sharp wit populate the pages of the #1 New York Times bestselling series, The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices.

Originally released one-by-one as e-only short stories by Cassandra Clare, Maureen Johnson, and Sarah Rees Brennan, this compilation presents all ten together in print for the first time and includes a never-before-seen eleventh tale, as well as new illustrated material.

My Thoughts

I am so, so glad I finally got around to reading this anthology. It’s been sitting on my To-Be-Read shelf for far too long, and, that, my friends, is a tragedy in its own right.

Magnus Bane has lived an incredibly adventurous, and colourful life. Even when he finds himself sitting on the couch, just watching television, adventure comes knocking on his door. Literally.

I managed to snag a copy of the anthology with a bonus 11th story, and I’m very glad I did. Seeing these snippets of Magnus’ life not only gives us a glimpse into his history of adventure, debauchery, love, and loss, it gives us a deeper insight into Downworld and Shadowhunter history. This is a very rich history worth knowing, and I’m so glad I understand it so much more now.

Through Magnus Bane, we learn a bit more about the London Institute before Charlotte and Henry took over. We learn a fair amount about everything that happened in New York prior to our Mortal Instruments adventures. We also learn a bit about Shadowhunter politics, and especially about their reaction to Valentine’s Circle. And, most importantly, we learn about Peru. A country I will never be able to look at the same way again. To be fair, I don’t think any of the individuals involved could have looked at Peru the same way again.

There are so many parts of these stories that made me cringe and broke my heart into a million tiny pieces. And while those parts hurt me almost as much as I’m sure they hurt Magnus, they are part of what makes him the warlock we know him now to be. These experiences shaped and changed him into who we know he is in present day. And those are important moments that need to be discovered and understood.

However, the best part of all of that pain and loss is how Magnus picks himself back up, mends the pieces of his own heart, and goes on. Because he has to. Because he has no choice in the matter. He lives, and he learns, over, and over, and over again. It makes him human. He may be a warlock, but he’s still inherently human – and that’s something important we all need to remember.

Magnus has made many friends through his life, many of which we remember and recognize. Many of which we learn so much more about. These stories enrich the entire Shadowhunter universe. They’re inclusive of the good, the bad, and the ugly. There is no sugar coating, and there is no apology.

But at the heart of everything, there’s silliness, there’s happiness, there’s love, and there’s friendship. Magnus has lived a very, very full life – one he lives to the very best to his abilities. He lives the best way he knows how, and he loves the best way he knows how. That’s the Magnus Bane we know, and that’s the Magnus Bane I absolutely adore.
